2016 CCYHC Symposium

WHAT ROLE IS THERE FOR A CANADIAN CHILDREN’S COMMISSIONER? PERSPECTIVES AND INSIGHTS FROM JURISDICTION TO OPPORTUNITY

The annual Canadian Child and Youth Health Coalition symposium will be held on Sunday, October 23rd, 2016 in conjunction with CAPHC's annual conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This year's symposium will focus on “What role is there for a Canadian Children’s Commissioner? Perspectives and insights from jurisdiction to opportunity.”

Over the past decade, many have promoted the need for a Children’s Commissioner for Canada. But what does this mean amidst the complex and often siloed jurisdictions of federal and provincial governments? Knowing what can be achieved within such a role and what ideals must go renounced is the discussion of supporters and skeptics alike.

We will hear from Anne Longfield OBE, Children’s Commissioner in the UK on what is being achieved in England for their most vulnerable children. She will passionately share the lessons learned while in this role. The discussion will explore ideas on how to structure an office that is able to make positive change for all children in Canada, but perhaps more importantly those who are most in need of support in such simple areas of their lives as at home, in classrooms and in courtrooms. Commissioner Longfield will be joined by a panel of Canadian experts who will excite and inform with their expertise, opinion and insight. Let us start a truly transformational discussion as we harness a future of hope and enlightenment for Canada’s most vulnerable children.
