Canadian kids are inactive and may be losing sleep over it
ParticipACTION releases 2016 Report Card and for the first time, assigns a sleep grade.
There are important relationships among sleep, physical activity and sedentary behaviour and new research shows that sedentary lifestyles are connected to a creeping ‘sleepidemic’ in Canadian children and youth. That is why, for the first time, the 2016 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth assigns a grade to sleep and includes new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth. A first of their kind in the world, the guidelines outline what a healthy 24-hour period looks like for children and youth.

The World’s Largest Sandbox: Playtime with purpose
OTTAWA, June 8, 2016 – Canada’s leaders were in the sandbox today to help build a healthier generation of Canadians. To raise awareness about The Sandbox Project, Parliamentarians, media personalities, not-for-profit and industry professionals joined 70 local schoolchildren and families to build sand sculptures in the Fifth Annual World’s Largest Sandbox on Ottawa’s Sparks Street.
Sabrina Shannon Memorial Award ($1000 post-secondary)

June 10th is the deadline to apply for the seventh annual Sabrina Shannon Memorial Award.
This award is dedicated to Sabrina Shannon, an inspiring teenager who suffered a fatal anaphylactic reaction in 2003. During her life, Sabrina helped to raise awareness about food allergy by creating a first-person radio documentary, “A Nutty Tale,” which aired on CBC Radio in 2001. Since her passing, Sabrina’s parents and other members of the allergy community have kept Sabrina’s spirit alive by advocating for allergy-aware school environments. In 2005, Sabrina’s Law was passed in Ontario, resulting in landmark legislation that has influenced school anaphylaxis policies across Canada.

Every year, The Sandbox Project holds the World’s Largest Sandbox – our signature annual event that aims to raise awareness of the importance of collaborating, investing and focusing on the health and wellbeing of Canada’s children and youth. This yearly event brings together Parliamentarians, media personalities, not-for-profit organizations and industry professionals in a giant sandbox with local children and school groups for an exciting sandcastle-building competition.
This year, The Sandbox Project has partnered with Smilezone Foundation to build a fully inclusive sandbox structure. For the first time ever, in collaboration with the Ontario Association of Children’s Rehabilitation Services (OACRS) and the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre (OCTC), we are happy to announce that the World’s Largest Sandbox event is now accessible to all children.
