On behalf of The Sandbox Project, I attended June receptions celebrating two outstanding mental health and wellness initiatives for children and youth. Sunnybrook has launched a unique navigational service to guide and support families who have youth struggling with mental health and addictions concerns. Companies Committed to Kids launched a series of awareness raising public service announcements that reveal some fundamental truths about kids’ mental health.

Phase two of the Sandbox Mental Health Initiative will help youth track their moods, activities, and response to treatment, while keeping in touch with healthcare providers

TORONTO, Jan. 23, 2014 /CNW/ – Today, The Sandbox Project announced $450,000 in joint funding to kick-start the second phase of The Sandbox Mental Health Initiative – a new virtual health network and mobile app to support youth and their families in the treatment of mental illness. Announced at The Sandbox Project 4th Annual National Conference and Workshop, funding support comes from TELUS, the RBC Foundation, the Graham Boeckh Foundation and the Echo Foundation.

With the desk-banging, heckling and mock outrage that passes for debate in Question Period, the ham-fisted attempts to steal from the cookie jar that is the public treasury and the almost laughable denials of the obvious, the antics of Parliamentarians can, at times, seem childish.

So it is nice to see that someone has thought it fit to set up a big sandbox near Parliament Hill – complete with pails and shovels – and invite MPs and Senators alike to come play.

The “world’s biggest sandbox” (as it is billed) is not designed to mock the foibles of elected officials but rather to engage them, to remind them that, when it comes to kids’ health, Canada can do a lot better.
