Beyond the Body: A PhotoVoice Exhibit

Beyond the Body: A PhotoVoice Exhibit will share the unique experiences of young South Asians tackling the diabetes epidemic in the Peel Region of Ontario, Canada. This first of a kind film presentation will look beyond traditional biomedical and behavioural approaches to diabetes prevention, and highlight the impact of social and systemic factors on the development of diabetes. Through the eyes of youth participating in the South Asian Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program (SAADAP), this project examines how migration stressors, income insecurity, mental health, the built environment, and interpersonal relationships influence diabetes risk in their racialized communities.

The project exemplifies how youth can be mobilized to become agents of change in their communities, and work towards breaking the systemic cycle of diabetes.

You are invited to attend this rare virtual exhibit with a live Q&A with the study team and youth:

  • Wednesday, January 13th 2021 from 12-1 p.m. EST

Through the Sandbox Impact Program, The Sandbox Project was proud to help support SAADAP as they transitioned this event to an innovative virtual setting.
